Writing The President

As I finished our first novel, On The Edge, my wife told me that I should next write a novel about the government. As a real estate guy who had never expected to write a short story, much less a novel, this seemed daunting…But she had been the inspiration behind the first novel, so I prayed and thought…

That spring we were stranded by a blizzard in the North Carolina mountains, and that's where the story first developed to write about a President beset by many domestic problems and international terrorists, with the various strands of the plot woven together through interaction with his family and grown siblings…

Over the next year I prayed and wrote and researched and prayed some more…There is an old adage to write about what you know…I spent several years in the Navy as a Communications Officer on a guided missile frigate, so I put the President's younger brother on a similar ship….I have a cousin who spent his life building nuclear bombs for our government and who gave me background information for the terrorists' bomb…my sister-in-law is a nurse who helped me with the hospital parts for one of the President's sisters.

As the novel neared completion, Multnomah selected it to publish and we began editing. The hardback edition came out a few months later, and it's uncanny how many of the issues we wove into the story have become even more in the public square today…

Multnomah decided to bring out a softcover edition three years later, in part because they thought a story about a President who struggles with and overcomes evil might be good timing with current events.

I hope that you enjoy reading the novel and that it challenges you to think about our government's policies, as well as the very foundations for our government.

After several years of commuting from Atlanta to Moscow to do commercial real estate there…several chapters of both novels were written on airplanes and in hotels…I'm now back home in Atlanta focused on Southeastern real estate and praying about a third novel.

If you have questions or comments, I will be happy to respond to your Emails….God bless you.
